Cinema d'IELTS

On this page you'll find links to videos which relate to IELTS topics.

At the moment, all of these videos are from the amazing  www.ted.com  website, which is an excellent resource for IELTS candidates. Later I plan to add others.

There are also vocabulary exercises for some of the videos, but not all. In cases where there are exercises, you'll see a link under the video description, taking you to the right page. With the others, I recommend that you just watch, enjoy, and write down anything you hear that might be useful.

Oh, one more thing: before you start watching, check to see if there are subtitles or a transcript. These can help you understand what the speaker is saying.

Education

Ken Robinson has some very interesting thoughts about education, and how it could be improved ... plus he's funny!
There are subtitles for this video, and a transcript in English.

Food Production and Sustainability

An unusual and fascinating look at the issue of how we produce our food. Can we sustain huge farms and mass food production forever? Dan Barber doesn't think so. He also thinks that, if we start farming animals in a more intelligent way, we'll have much tastier fish!

This is a trailer (= a movie advertisement) for a documentary called 'Food Inc.', which was released in 2008. It mentions some of the ideas related to modern food production which you could be asked about in the IELTS exam. Watch the trailer and ask yourself "What are the main issues here?" Also, make a note of any useful vocabulary you hear.

I'll post some vocabulary exercises about this video later :-)

Music and The Arts

The Korean novelist Young-Ha Kim has a very interesting theory: he argues that all people are naturally attracted to making art, and that we all do this in our childhood. He also says that we can re-discover this interest and be artists again, in our everyday lives. Young-Ha Kim speaks in Korean, but there are English subtitles and an English transcript.

Amanda Palmer is an alternative musician and a former human statue. (You know those people you sometimes see in the street, who paint themselves like statues and stand completely still? She did that for five years!) Recently Amanda raised over a million dollars just by asking her fans to support her. She was then able to give away her music for free. This talk is really inspiring, and it contains useful vocabulary on a number of topics - from music and art to job satisfaction and human relationships. I strongly recommend it :-)

Work-Life Balance

This is a common topic in IELTS, and there are a lot of possible questions you could be asked.

The speaker in this video feels very passionately that most people give too much of themselves to the  companies they work for, and not enough to their families. Watch the video and see if you agree.
