This section is for students who live in Almaty.
Remember that "Your Home Town" is the most common topic in the IELTS Speaking Module. It's very important that you record and remember some good vocabulary on this topic, and be ready to talk about Almaty if your examiner asks you about it.
I hope these resources will give you some ideas :-)
A video about Almaty from Youtube:
A lot of the language in this video is 'journalistic style', so we can't take it directly from the video and use it in the exam. However, it gives some basic information about Almaty, including:
- that the name Almaty means "city of apples"
- that some people believe apples originally come from Kazakhstan.
- that Almaty is a 'garden city' ( = a very green city).
- that it is in the south of Kazakhstan
- that it was once the capital, and it's still the financial capital.
The video also shows several things that you can see in Almaty, including
- public spaces in the centre, like fountains
- places to relax, like cafes
- skyscrapers ( = high-rise offices) in the financial district
- the Arasan baths.
- the Green Bazaar, which is the largest market in Kazakhstan.
- the Metro.
- some shots of mountain scenery.
EXERCISE 1:
Read the list of things shown in the video, then watch the video again. For each thing, think of
- two adjectives you could use to describe it
- two things you can do there.
Example:
"The cafes in Almaty are very chic and quite expensive. You can relax there with friends and have coffee, or try some European cakes and pastries."
Post your answers in the comments box.
EXERCISE 2:
A: Look at the statements below, some of which are from the video:
1. People in Almaty love going out into the street and spending
time in the public spaces around the city.
2. It is a tradition for Kazakh people to visit a banya every week.
3. Almaty has a good 'cafe culture'.
4. The Metro is less crowded than other forms of transport in Almaty.
- Do you agree with these ideas? Why or why not?
- Can you add any more detail to the statements?
Post your answers in the comments box.
B: Watch the video one more time. Listen for words and phrases which
you think may be useful for talking about Almaty. Write down four or
five of these, and post them below.
EXERCISE 3:
Imagine a friend is visiting you from another city, and it's their first time in Almaty. You want to show him/her the best parts of the city. Which things in the video would you show your friend, and why? Is there anything not in the video that you would include on your personal 'Almaty tour'?
Post your answers in the comments box.
ANOTHER ALMATY VIDEO (WITHOUT WORDS)
This video has no dialogue. Look at the different sights that it shows, and try to think of some vocabulary you could use to describe them. Write your thoughts in the comments box below.
